A hidden talent

Apparently I have a talent that I never before suspected. This Saturday I stopped by my office to work on some end-of-the-month tasks for a few hours and discovered, on my way out of the building, that I have hidden skill. As I was leaving, some movers were trying unsuccessfully to cram a large table through the door. I laughed as they backed out to allow me through, "That reminds me of moving a couch into my first home! It got so wedged in the front door that we thought for awhile it was going to be a permanent fixture!" The men laughed with me, then continued to puzzle out just how to fit such a large piece of furniture through such a narrow doorframe. I got into my car, buckled my seatbelt, looked up to start my engine....and saw just how the movers could get that table inside the building. So I pulled my keys out of the ignition, unbuckled my seatbelt, and got out of the car to offer some help.

"What if you turn the table on its side, then pull the table in feet first?" I suggested, hoping I wasn't being nosy. "Then you can take advantage of the extra room on the right side of the door, and then twist it as far as you can toward your left so the back end can fit just in the door?" The guys, looking helpless, gave my suggestion a try. I had to demonstrate what I meant a few times, "No, no - farther to your left. Your left. Then he'll follow you," before the table inched its way with no extra room into the building. The guys stood there, amazed. "Lucky for us we had a girl here to help us!" they exclaimed, and I was glad I had stayed those extra few minutes. Trusting them to somehow muddle through the rest of the move, I waved goodbye and made a quick exit toward my car before anyone could suggest that I stay. Maybe I should have asked them how much they paid per hour....

In our family, Jim and Megan were the ones with the spacial talent, while me, Mom, and Dad worked more by trial and error. At least I thought so - maybe Megan's brilliant mind rubbed off on me, or maybe it was all that math I did in high school that made angles and equations and "this and this equals that" make sense. Either way, I have to say that I walked to my car that afternoon with a little swagger in my step!

That is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE SCENE from "Blue Harvest"!!! Bwa ha ha ha ha!!! "No no no no no...stop stop stop stop! See how I'm twisting it? See? No--look at my hands. Look down. DOWN." Oh my gosh. That totally describes every move Karl and I have ever made. Can you believe in five years of marriage, we'll have moved SIX TIMES? I'm so done with that.

As for my genius at spatial relationships, I'm not so sure my earlier prowess is still alive and kicking. Well, maybe it is, but my senses of time, distance, and direction are all seriously in question. Probably because I'm getting old. I'm in my LATE 20s, you know! (OMG. That is so depressing. Are you not totally depressed as well???)

You moved SIX TIMES??? Holy heck -that is WAY too much. And yes, I am totally depressed now, thanks. I refuse to acknowledge that I am no longer 23.
